Coming out of High School and determining what you’re going to major in college could be a stressful and difficult decision, but it’s something that has to be done. It’s not good for people to graduate from high school, and attend college with no idea of what their career choices are.
When this happens it could really be a set back because students could go through three years of school and want to change their major to something totally different, which means the classes that the student took probably doesn’t even correspond with their new major. To avoid these types of situations you should go through these three steps.
- Self Assessments- There are different types of assessment tests that could help you choose the field or fields you are most interested in.
- Investigate your career choices- Once you’ve chose the field; reading about it, talking to people, and experiencing it firsthand can help you learn more about the different careers in the field.
- Find a Career Match- When making a career choice don’t focus on the future, focus on who you are today.
By choosing a career you feel you’re interested in you will most likely avoid the conundrum of repeatedly changing your major.
Most careers require further education and/or training upon receiving your high school diploma. Depending on what career option you choose determines your educational level.
Career and Technology Education are programs that helps students gain education and experience to prepare for chosen career while still in high school. While Community Colleges, the Military, Apprenticeships, and On-The-Job training are available for high school graduates to take advantage of.
A four-year college or a bachelor’s degree is basically a must for about 30% of careers today. They generally offer a wide variety of majors, and is the most expensive of all schools and colleges. In Community Colleges you could receive an associate’s degree within 2 years. The courses are more affordable, and classes are small so the students are able to receive more one on one time with their instructors compared to a 4 year college where the classes are larger.
Some young men and young women decide to go to the Military after high school. There are four major branches that you’re able to choose from; they are the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, and the Marines. You could further your education which ever way you decide to go. Career and Technical Schools are a little different; they offer education and training whereby the student receives a certificate with the benefit of on the job training.
The reason for these different types of institutions is for the student to research and choose the appropriate school that fits their personality and career field.
